carrot 'Early Nantes'

carrot or Daucus carota 'Early Nantes'

Product Image
An extremely versatile, fast-maturing variety that's one of the best and most popular for early sowing. Easy-going enough to grow in troughs and containers, it produces long, blunt-nosed roots which are well-coloured and have almost no core, so the texture is light and crunchy, with a rich flavour that's all a carrot should be.

How to care for carrot Early Nantes:

Water regularly in dry weather to promote even growth and prevent splitting. Keep beds weed-free to reduce competition. As roots develop, earth up slightly to stop shoulders turning green. Use horticultural fleece to protect against carrot fly. Harvest when roots are mature and firm – gently lift with a fork to to avoid damage. Store only undamaged carrots in cool, dry conditions.

Sowing instructions:

Sow carrot seeds thinly in shallow drills, covering lightly with soil or compost. For early or late crops, use cloches or grow under cover to protect seedlings from the cold. Thin gradually to final spacing of around 5cm (2in), ideally in the evening to reduce the risk of carrot fly. Water before thinning to minimise root disturbance.

Avoid sowing in freshly manured soil, which can cause roots to fork. Grow under horticultural fleece or surround crops with a 60cm (2ft) high barrier to deter carrot fly. Sow small batches every few weeks for a continuous harvest from early summer to autumn. Harvest when roots reach a usable size, around 4–5cm (2in) wide.
