Erythronium 'Harvington Sunshine'

Dogtooth violet

Product Image
Bright citrus-yellow flowers make this a real highlight in the spring garden, especially when planted where their colour can be appreciated up close. Nodding, star-shaped blooms open from March to April above fresh green leaves, which are attractively marked with subtle pale mottling.

Erythronium 'Harvington Sunshine' is well suited to light or partial shade, particularly in a cool, sheltered woodland-style setting where the soil remains reliably moist but well drained. Its elegant flowers work nicely beneath deciduous trees, through shady borders or naturalised among other spring bulbs.

After flowering, the foliage dies back naturally as the plant enters a summer dormancy, returning the following spring.

How to care for Erythronium Harvington Sunshine:

Plant in partial shade in humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil, setting plants at the same depth they were in their pots. Space them 20-30cm (8-12in) apart in naturalistic groups and water well after planting. Apply a 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of leaf mould or compost in autumn to help conserve moisture and feed the roots. Leave plants undisturbed once established, and remove old foliage only after it has fully died back.

Avoid planting beneath thirsty trees or shrubs that dry out the soil in summer.
