Stars of the midsummer garden, day-lilies are sought after for their showy blooms. These may only lasy for a single day, but they appear in such great abundance, that their display is dazzling. Forming attractive clumps of strap-shaped foliage, they are also useful for adding textural interest in mixed planting schemes.
How to care for Hemerocallis collection:
The Greek term 'hemerocallis' means 'beautiful for a day', and daylilies need regular deadheading to prolong flowering and prevent their unsightly deadheads from dominating the scene. Each stem carries several flowers, so snap off each flower as it fades. Then, when the stem has finished flowering, cut it down to the ground. Remove dead or damaged leaves as they appear, and lift and divide every three years. Each spring, apply a (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted garden compost or manure around the base of the plant and keep the plants well-watered until the buds appear.
What's included:
In each collection you will receive 3 bare root plants - one of each of the following:
- Hemerocallis 'Strawberry Candy': Bursting into bloom in July, these gorgeously ruffled, bright coral pink flowers, each have a fine picotee margin, and a matching flush of strawberry red towards their beaming yellow-green throat. Grows to 65cm.
- Hemerocallis 'Canadian Border Patrol': Lightly ruffled, apricot-yellow flowers, which are accented by their contrasting raspberry red markings, appear in abundance in midsummer. A rewarding and easy to grow perennial. Grows to 70cm.
- Hemerocallis 'Olive Bailey Langdon': This daylily produces masses of lightly fragrant, deep burgundy-red flowers, each with a yellow-green throat. It will look wonderful when planted in drifts in a sunny mixed or herbaceous border, where it will add a bold shot of colour to the palette. Grows to 70cm.
