Ideal for formal hedging and topiary, this compact, bushy evergreen delivers year-round structure with modest upkeep once established. Its small, glossy leaves emerge pale green before deepening into a rich dark green. Clusters of delicate white flowers appear in spring, adding subtle seasonal interest.
The plant thrives in a variety of settings due to its excellent disease resistance and cold tolerance, making it a superb Box (Buxus) substitute. Its naturally rounded, well-branched habit makes it perfect for low hedges and parterres.
Easily pruned into crisp shapes, Ilex crenata 'Luxus' stands as a superb, low-maintenance alternative to boxwood in formal clipped garden schemes.

How to care for Ilex crenata Luxus ('Annys5') (PBR):
Choose a spot with well-drained, fertile soil in full sun to partial shade. Dig a hole slightly wider than the root ball and mix in plenty of organic matter to improve moisture retention and nutrient availability.
If planting as a hedge, space your plants about 20-30cm (8-12in) apart to allow for good air circulation and proper shaping, and to ensure good soil conatct around each plant. Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil around the roots.
Plants grown as free-standing specimens require minimal pruning - remove diseased or misplaced branches in spring. Trim plants grown as formal hedges in late summer.
After pruning, apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted compost or manure around the base of the plant to conserve moisture and suppress weeds.
